The Blank Back
We came home from the Front Row Card Show in Portland with plenty of new cards—and plenty of new stories.
One of the most compelling begins with a card whose back tells you absolutely nothing.
No biography. No statistics. No explanation. Just untouched cardboard.
Turn it over, however, and it captures one of hockey’s most famous goals. What followed transformed a championship moment into one of the sport’s enduring mysteries.
We will begin with the blank back.
Tomorrow, we turn it over.

The Winning Goal
On April 21, 1951, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens played Game 5 of a Stanley Cup Final unlike any other. Every game in the series required overtime.
Just 2:53 into the extra period, Toronto defenseman Bill Barilko moved in from the blue line and lifted the puck past Canadiens goaltender Gerry McNeil.
The goal gave Toronto the game, the series, and its fourth Stanley Cup in five seasons.
Parkhurst turned the moment into card number 52, The Winning Goal. The image freezes Barilko in midair as the puck enters the net—the instant a 24-year-old defenseman became a championship hero.
It was also the final goal Bill Barilko would ever score.

The Mystery and the Return
Four months after scoring the Stanley Cup winner, Bill Barilko joined his friend Henry Hudson on a fishing trip in northern Quebec. Their small plane vanished on the flight home.
Searches found nothing. For more than a decade, the fate of the two men remained unknown.
During those years, Toronto did not win another Stanley Cup. Then, in 1962, the Maple Leafs finally returned to the top of hockey. Weeks later, wreckage from the missing plane was discovered in the wilderness near Cochrane, Ontario, and the remains of Barilko and Hudson were recovered.
The coincidence became part of hockey folklore and, decades later, part of Canadian music history through the Tragically Hip’s “Fifty Mission Cap.”
That is what makes this card feel frozen in time. It was printed to celebrate a winning goal. History turned it into a record of the last one.
